2019 Toyota 4Runner in Central Oregon: Is it a Worthy Rival to the 2019 Subaru Ascent?

Date Posted: February 12, 2019

The 2019 Toyota 4Runner in Central Oregon is running against the 2019 Subaru Ascent for SUV supremacy. Both vehicles have fans across the country, and each offers a commanding array of capabilities, features, and technology. Yet only one SUV deserves the higher ranking. Find out below which one grabs it!

Safety Comparison

The 2019 Toyota 4Runner's overbearing presence hides a disappointing level of safety. The Car Connection rated it 2 out of 10, noting the lack of advanced features as a cause for concern. In addition, it only earned four stars from the NHTSA, with a disturbing 3-star rollover rating. The Toyota 4Runner also received a weak "Marginal" score from the IIHS in a crash test that simulates impact with an oncoming car. Therefore, do not expect much when it comes to the safety features on the 2019 Toyota 4Runner - it does have traction control mode and a full set of airbags, but nothing much beyond that. The safety suite has no automatic emergency braking, active lane control, or blind spot monitors, which are safety technologies that are standard on many new cars.

In contrast, the 2019 Subaru Ascent performs brilliantly in the safety department. It earned a stellar 9 out of 10 points from The Car Connection and straight 5-stars from the NHTSA. The Subaru Ascent was also awarded the Top Safety Pick+ designation from the IIHS, which is the highest and hardest score to earn from the agency.

Subaru's revolutionary EyeSight suite of active safety systems comes with adaptive cruise control, windshield-mounted cameras, and active lane control. You can also add more protection with features such as rear automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitors, a 180-degree forward facing camera, and forward collision warnings. In terms of safety, the 2019 Toyota 4Runner doesn't even come close to the 2019 Subaru Ascent.

Passenger Space Comparison

The 2019 Toyota 4Runner is in its element outdoors, but city drivers may find the cabin lackluster. Cargo utility is excellent and can easily fit your luggage, camping gear, and sports equipment. The seats are supportive, but some might be uncomfortable with how close the vehicle sits to the ground. While a third row is optional, adult passengers will have a hard time settling in due to the cramped space.

The 2019 Subaru Ascent is off-road ready as well, but it seeks to please. Value-oriented shoppers will love the many standard features on the base trim such as Bluetooth connectivity, USB ports, power features, 18-inch wheels, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus standard All Wheel Drive to sweeten the deal. Luxurious optional equipment includes leather, heated and ventilated seats, beautiful woodgrain trim, second-row captain's chairs, a large 8-inch touchscreen, and more.

Reliability Comparison

In some surveys, Toyota scores higher than Subaru, but take note that those ratings often apply to vehicles other than the 2019 Toyota 4Runner.  Consumer Reports declared Subaru the 4th most reliable car manufacturer in its recent Reliability survey.

When you consider the resale value - which is another great measure of a car's reliability - used Subarus are in high demand, sometimes as much as new models. This is because Subaru components such as the differentials and engine transmission are known to have some of the best designs and engineering in the industry.

Engine Comparison

Under the hood, the 2019 Toyota 4Runner enjoys a slight edge with 270 horsepower versus 260 horsepower. In terms of fuel efficiency (27mpg) and performance, the 2019 Subaru continues to win out. If you're planning to pull a trailer, camper, or small boat with your SUV, both vehicles provide 5,000 lbs. towing capacity.

However, the standard Trailer Stability Assist and the improved traction from the All-Wheel Drive make the 2019 Subaru Ascent more effective when towing.
