The 2019 Honda HR-V in Bend, OR continues the great tradition of the brand's compact crossover SUVs. Overall, this compact SUV is worthy of all the praise. Upon further scrutiny, however, the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek outclasses it in terms of safety performance, passenger comfort, and engine performance.

Safety Comparison

Compact SUVs continue to set a high standard in terms of safety, measured primarily by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). While many had high expectations for the Honda HR-V, it surprisingly did poorly in the latest IIHS study. The HR-V ranked poorly for its headlight quality, plus it lacked a LATCH for child seats, an essential criterion in the survey.

On the other hand, the Subaru Crosstrek scored very well in the IIHS survey. It was ranked as a Top Safety Pick+, and had extra LATCH positions, giving it a bigger edge. In addition, it ranked highly in all of the study's categories.

When it comes to the active safety features, the Honda HR-V failed to provide standard options that the Subaru Crosstrek featured. The EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, available for the basic trims, offered many features that were lacking on the HR-V including Adaptive Cruise, Pre-collision Braking, Lane Departure and Sway Warning, and Lane Keep Assist. With Subaru including safety features in its most basic models, their vehicle tops the active safety study.

Passenger Space Comparison

Although not as big as full-sized SUVs, space is still a concern for crossover wagons. In this category, the competition is neck-and-neck, but there is still a clear winner. The Honda HR-V has a passenger volume of 100.1 cubic feet, allowing  39.5 in headroom, 41.2 in legroom, and 56.8 in shoulder room.  On the other hand, the Subaru Crosstrek has a passenger volume of 100.9 cubic ft, with 39.8 in headroom, 43.1 in legroom, and 56.7 in shoulder room.

The infotainment system is also an important consideration. The Subaru STARLINK multimedia system is offered on the basic trim of the Subaru Crosstrek, allowing users to access features like smartphone integration and LCD touchscreen display, while the Honda HR-V does not include Apple CarPlay or Android Auto in its basic models. The upper hand is given to the Subaru Crosstrek in this category.

Reliability Comparison

Reliability is a big factor for any vehicle, especially crossover wagons, as these vehicles tend to have the longest average ownership time period. Traditionally, you look at the warranty of the vehicle to see how reliable it is. In this case, however, the Honda and Subaru vehicles have the same warranties. The limited basic warranties are three years/36,000 miles (whichever comes first), and powertrains are five years/60,000 miles for both.

With equal warranties, the next basis would be the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) records. Upon checking, the Honda HR-V has already had a single recall and ten complaints against it. The Subaru Crosstrek did better, with 0 recalls and 0 complaints. Another aspect to note is that 97% of Subaru vehicles sold in the last ten years are still on the road. Since the Crosstrek continues in that building tradition, you can expect it to be more reliable than its rival.

Engine Comparison

Since a crossover vehicle straddles between being a sedan and an SUV, it needs a specialized engine to complement it. Both of these crossover vehicles have engines that uphold their strengths. Under the Honda HR-V's hood is the In-Line 4-Cylinder SOHC i-VTEC engine, which churns out 141 horsepower and delivers 127 lb-ft of torque. Operating on an all-wheel-drive platform and giving up 30 miles to the gallon, the Honda HR-V is blessed to have such an engine.

While astounding, this is no match for the Subaru Crosstrek's 2.0L Subaru Boxer 4-cylinder engine. The Subaru workhorse could generate up to 152 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque, making it the more powerful engine. In addition, it operates over a symmetrical all-wheel drive which runs up to 33 miles per gallon. When it comes to engines, the Subaru Crosstrek is still king.

Verdict: The Subaru Crosstrek Asserts Total Dominance

The 2019 Honda HR-V in Bend, OR is an exceptional crossover vehicle, but if you want better safety features, more spacious interiors, and a more powerful engine, the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek is the better choice. Click to learn more about 2019 Subaru Crosstrek.
